Lyrics That Get Me Every Time

I am a huge music lover, and one thing I immediately listen to when I hear a song for the first time is the lyrics. Some people listen for the beat or melody, but I listen to the words and the message an artist is trying to get across. I like songs that can get me dancing, explain the emotions I’m feeling, perfectly describe something I’ve experienced or am experiencing, and are empowering and uplifting. Of course, when I am feeling particularly single (like on Valentine’s Day), I listen to love songs (Fallin’ by Alicia Keys is the first one I go to).

Anyway, today I decided to share some of my favorite song lyrics, emphasis on the some. They either perfectly capture how I was feeling, explain an era in my life, or gave me hope.

“Twenty-five whole years alive
And I couldn’t feel more blessed
Twenty-five whole years alive
And I couldn’t feel more stress”
Congratulations by JZAC

“I’ve got a problem, I’m always so sad
The littlest things get me pissed off or mad
My life’s pretty good, no I don’t have it bad
So it’s hard to explain all these feelings I have”
Sad Song by Scotty Sire

“Everyone knows what I look like
Not even one of them knows me”
Everybody Hates Me by The Chainsmokers

“I woke up pissed off today
And lately everyone feels fake
Somewhere I lost a piece of me”
There for You by Martin Garrix and Troye Sivan

“I’m a product of the internet
And now I’m face to face with all the voices in my head
I can’t even check the time without facing regret”
Everybody Hates Me by The Chainsmokers

“I don’t know who to trust
These days everyone’s shady
Fool me once, I’m on my own
There is no second time, baby”
Myself by Bazzi

“If I showed the world what you said, it ain’t beautiful, yeah
They think you’re so sweet
But behind the scenes, you’re cold and cruel”
Petty by Jessie J

“This one for my black kings, black queens, busy doing black things
Said we couldn’t have dreams
Know how stupid that seems”
BLaCKTHiNGZ by Houston Kendrick

“I heard you die twice, once when they bury you in the grave
And the second time is the last time that somebody mentions your name
So when I leave here on this earth, did I take more than I gave?
Did I look out for the people or did I do it all for fame?”
Glorious by Macklemore ft. Skylar Grey

“Hates been winning, but the lovers ain’t done”
Lions by Skip Marley

Two quick things before you go:

  1. There are two songs with lyrics that need to be a part of this public portion of the list, but that would require putting the entire song. They are Youth by Shawn Mendes, Khalid and This is America by Childish Gambino.
  2. Who are some of the artists you enjoy listening to?
