The Best of the Met: 2019

May 8, 2019

I was trying to get this up as soon as possible because I love the Met Gala.

But then life and the need for sleep happened, so here we are two days later.

Anyway, the Met Gala happened this past Monday, May 6, 2019. The theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. The theme was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp.” Essentially, it is all about exaggeration and being over-the-top (that’s me sugarcoating it), and the entire event was sponsored by Gucci.

Given the theme and the history behind it, I was a little nervous about this Met Gala. I honestly wasn’t sure if anyone would do the theme (and Susan Sontag) justice; I just wasn’t sure how well this was going to go. Also, when it comes to formal events, I am into more simpler gowns or outfits that are not annoyingly over-the-top (if that makes any sense).

Needless to say, this list of my favorite 2019 Met Gala looks is all based on my personal opinion/personal preference when it comes to style.

Let’s get into it.

KERBY JEAN RAYMOND & LENA WAITHE

*Side note: Lena Waithe and Kerby Jean Raymond = geniuses. Their Met looks give a nod to black queers who heavily contributed to camp (among others). Also, the stripes are lyrics to songs, such as “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross and “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.

JENNIFER LOPEZ

Atelier Versace halter gown with matching headpiece, Harry Winston necklace

JOE JONAS & SOPHIE TURNER

Louis Vuitton

ALICIA KEYS

Carolina Herrera w/ Tiffany & Co. jewelry

DANAI GURIRA

Gabriela Hearst, Jimmy Choo heels

CONSTANCE WU

Marchesa w/ Stuart Weitzman heels

HAILEE STEINFELD

Viktor & Rolf w/ Henry Winston jewelry

JANELLE MONAE

Christian Siriano, Hanut Singh jewelry, Sara Sokol Millinery hats

TRACEE ELLIS ROSS

Moschino by Jeremy Scott, Jimmy Choo heels, Tiffany & Co. jewelry

KATIE HOLMES

Zac Posen, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, Tyler Ellis clutch

SOLANGE KNOWLES

Salvatore Ferragamo

HENRY GOLDING

Atelier Versace

SAOIRSE RONAN

Gucci

JANET MOCK

Alberta Ferretti Limited Edition, Jacob & Co. jewelry

HALSEY

Atelier Prabal Gurung, Brother Vellies heels, Jennifer Fisher cuffs + rings, Tasaki Atelier earrings

THE WINNER…

(the outfit I liked the most)

ZENDAYA!!!

Tommy Hilfiger ball gown (that lights up!)

All I have to say is Zendaya really did THAT. Her gown was simple, but thanks to technology, it was over-the-top in a classy way. She was literally Cinderella.

Those were all the 2019 Met Gala looks I really liked. Which one was your favorite? Who do you think captured the theme better? Any guesses for next year’s Met theme? I would love to hear your thoughts.
