We’ve known each other since the forth grade, and there was no way I could not interview Maria G. I’ve had the pleasure of watching her evolve and become so herself and authentic. She is going to change the world, and the world is not ready. Maria is another woman in my life I look up to and want to be like one day. These are the questions for her interview in the order they were asked.
SJ: What is your major and/or minor, and why did you choose it?
MG: My major is psychology, and my minors are mental health services and entertainment technology. I like it. I enjoy it, and it comes easy to me, but I still learn.
What social or political issue are you passionate about?
Every fucking thing. Immigration. The environment in general. Anything that doesn’t make another person equal.
If you could live in any country in the world, where would you live and why?
Antarctica because I’ve never heard of anyone else living in Antarctica.
Describe yourself at thirty.
… Good question… You know at thirty I wanna be a mother, but I wanna be a cool mom. I wanna be funny; I wanna be a stand-up comedian. I just wanna be cool. I wanna be comfortable. I wanna be successful. My terms of success, which means having enough money to eat, a place to live. Literally that’s my term of success.
What do you want right now?
I want milk crates. I switched my TV with my sister ’cause I didn’t want my flat screen anymore, so I switched it for her little TV that has the VHS thing, and it’s so small that I can put it in milk crates and remove my TV stand.
Best movie you’ve seen since the start of 2019?
Booksmart. I laughed the whole entire time. I don’t think there’s one scene I didn’t laugh at. I think I cried too, like a little tear came out.
How would you describe a beautiful woman?
A woman. Everyone’s beautiful.
What is something you would tell your high school freshman self?
Don’t give one fuck. Don’t matter if you get a C. Don’t matter if you get a D. Don’t matter if you don’t try. Grades don’t matter– to a certain extent. As long as you’re not failing every class, it’s alright. You don’t have to try that hard.
What is the best thing about being single?
You don’t have to report to anyone. Even if you do one little thing that’s a little weird, no one’s gonna care. The whole world– that’s your canvas.
