Notes from Black Church Week

August 6, 2019

I went to three different sessions during Black Church Week and though I’d share my notes from those sessions.

TUESDAY

“So You Want to Be an Author?” by Brian

BEFORE YOU WRITE

  • write as much as you can to find your voice and hone your craft
    • “The more you write, the better you get.”
  • goal of the first draft: get the words out
  • write. set aside for a day or two. come back with fresh eyes.
  • make an appointment with yourself to write on a regular basis.
  • “Every word that you write should matter. Every word should be essential.”
  • a self-published author is not the same as a published author
    • self-publishing doesn’t get you noticed
  • keep an audio recorder and/or notepad by the bed/by your side to document your ideas
  • “The reason you have writer’s block is because you don’t know what you want to say.”

EXCEL AT THE BASICS

  • ask for constructive criticisms (will only help you become better)
  • know the purpose
  • know your audience
  • write with style; saturate your verbs in your writing
    • use adverbs sparingly
  • alternate between short, medium, and long sentences
  • work in tweetables as you’re writing

WEDNESDAY

“God & The Law of Attraction” by Dr. Iris

“Like attracts like.”
If you hang around five broke people, you’ll be the sixth one.

  1. MAKE A DECISION
    • Romans 12:2
    • if you want optimum, you have to be optimum
    • you can’t let what’s around you affect you
  2. WRITE A PLAN
    • Habakkuk 2:1-3
    • when you start doing stuff you love, the money will beat/meet you there.
  3. WATCH YOUR WORDS
    • Proverbs 18:21
    • don’t tell everyone your decision because they are not on your level
    • negative words/negativity come passively from people we love and respect
  4. TAKE SMALL ACTIONABLE STEPS
    • Luke 17:14
  5. STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR GOAL
    • 1 Corinthians 15:58
    • don’t let a good thing distract you from your God thing
  6. MANAGE YOUR TIME
    • Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
    • the news is designed to insight fear
  7. DON’T QUIT
    • Galatians 6:7-10
    • people who do the same thing, get the same thing

THURSDAY

“The Half Education of Jay-Z” by Yana

There aren’t many notes from this class. We essentially dissected some lyrics from “Kill Jay-Z” by Jay-Z. After we dissected his song, we compared it to David (from the Bible) and his story. I literally only have two notes from this class, which are:

  • (about “Kill Jay-Z”) theme of self-preservation; looking out for himself
  • Jay-Z had a “man in the mirror” moment; David had a “come to Jesus” moment

These are all my notes from Black Church Week. All three sessions were absolutely wonderful, and I can’t wait to go back to the mountaintop.
