Top Nineteen Albums of 2019

December 31, 2019

As we enter a new year (and a new decade), I wanted to recount all of the albums I listened to this past year because, believe it or not, I kept record of every album I listened to (59 total).

Before you get overwhelmed, I’m not going to review every single album I listened to because that would be a lot. Instead, I decided to rank my top nineteen albums of twenty nineteen.

Note: Some of these didn’t come out in 2019, but this year was my first time listening to them.

19. No. 6 Collaborations Project

Artist/band: Ed Sheeran
Release date: July 12, 2019
Number of songs: 15
Duration: 49 minutes, 48 seconds
Genre: Pop
Quick opinion: An album full of collaborations sounded like music to my ears. I was expecting every song to sound different from the last. Unfortunately, it didn’t exactly meet my expectations; “BLOW” was quite the surprise though.

18. aurora

Artist/band: Bea Miller
Release date: February 23, 2018
Number of songs: 14
Duration: 45 minutes, 20 seconds
Genre: Pop
Quick opinion: Bea Miller did her thing, period. This album is amazing, and she deserves so much more attention. “S.L.U.T” was popular for a hot minute, but can we give some hype to “motherlove” too?

17. The Sun Will Come Up, the Seasons Will Change

Artist/band: Nina Nesbitt
Release date: February 1, 2019
Number of songs: 13
Duration: 46 minutes, 7 seconds
Genre: Pop
Quick opinion: I had never heard of Nina Nesbitt, but this album was stellar. She is an underrated queen with a lot of soul; she puts herself in her music, and it shows.

16. TIM

Artist/band: Avicii
Release date: June 6, 2019
Number of songs: 12
Duration: 38 minutes, 53 seconds
Genre: Dance/Electronic
Quick opinion: I was an emotional mess during this album, despite it being a part of the “dance/electronic” genre. “Fades Away” as the final song shattered my heart. Rest in peace, Avicii.

15. WILLOW

Artist/band: Willow Smith (but I think she only goes by Willow)
Release date: July 19, 2019
Number of songs: 8
Duration: 22 minutes, 33 seconds
Genre: Alternative/Indie, Pop
Quick opinion: I didn’t know she started doing music again until I was introduced to “Wait a Minute!” Personally, I thought this album was really good; it had a very nice vibe about it.

14. portraits

Artist/band: Greyson Chance
Release date: March 15, 2019
Number of songs: 12
Duration: 34 minutes, 34 seconds
Genre: Synth-pop
Quick opinion: He’s back, and he’s beautiful. I have missed Greyson Chance’s music, and this album did not disappoint. There’s a unique vibe about his music, and I love it.

13. Empress

Artist/band: RAY BLK
Release date: October 26, 2018
Number of songs: 8
Duration: 29 minutes, 44 seconds
Genre: R&B/Soul
Quick opinion: “I don’t want to settle for less cause I’m an empress…” This album is so amazing and truthful and empowering. I discovered RAY BLK this year, and I am so happy I did. When lyrics stick with you, you know it’s a good album, and different lyrics from this album are still with me.

12. Fever

Artist/band: Megan Thee Stallion
Release date: May 17, 2019
Number of songs: 14
Duration: 40 minutes, 9 seconds
Genre: Hip Hop/Rap
Quick opinion: Apparently, this is a mixtape. No matter what you call it, it’s great. Megan Thee Stallion became my favorite ratchet (not in a negative sense) rapper this year. The fact that the album starts with “Realer,” you know it’s gonna be good.

11. i like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it

Artist/band: The 1975

10. Romance

Artist/band: Camila Cabello
Release date: December 6, 2019
Number of songs: 14
Duration: 46 minutes, 47 seconds
Genre: Pop
Quick opinion: This album got a lot of slack after it came out. People were saying that she copied several other artists, and overall, it was deemed a flop. However, I really liked it; it genuinely felt like romance, and as a lover of romance, I really enjoyed it.

9. The Human Condition

Release date: September 27, 2019
Number of songs: 11

6. Heavy Is the Head

Artist/band: Stormzy

Number of songs: 16
Duration: 54 minutes, 3 seconds

Quick opinion: Stormzy is underrated in America, and that’s all I have to say. This album is literally genius and will definitely be played on repeat in 2020.

5. The Good & The Bad

Artist/band: Anthony Ramos
Release date: October 25, 2019
Number of songs: 12
Duration: 39 minutes, 27 seconds
Genre: Pop
Quick opinion: This album is another one that will get played on repeat in twenty twenty. Anthony Ramos is a beautiful singer, and his single “Mind Over Matter” makes me melt every single time I listen to it. Give him hype; this is an outstanding album.

4. Cuz I Love You (Deluxe)

Artist/band: Lizzo
Release date: May 3, 2019
Number of songs: 14
Duration: 42 minutes, 9 seconds
Genre(s): Pop, Rock, Hip-hop, Funk, Contemporary R&B (again, according to Google)
Quick opinion: Lizzo is one hundred percent a queen. She’s worked so dang hard to get to where she is, and I couldn’t be prouder. Also, this album makes me feel so freaking empowered. From “Soulmate” to “Water Me,” I love this album.

3. Beauty Marks

Artist/band: Ciara
Release date: May 10. 2019
Number of songs: 11
Duration: 40 minutes, 6 seconds
Genre: R&B/Soul, Pop

2. The Search

Artist/band: NF

Number of songs: 20
Duration: 1 hour, 16 minutes
Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
Quick opinion: I genuinely believe NF gets better with every new project he puts out (even his recent single, “PAID MY DUES”), and this album is no exception. I’ve never said this about a rap album, but it’s so beautiful.

1. Neotheater

Artist/band: AJR
Release date: April 26, 2019
Number of songs: 12
Duration: 44 minutes, 27 seconds
Genre: Alternative/Indie, Pop
Quick opinion: One word: perfect. Every single thing about this album is perfect, which is probably why it’s my number one for the year. I can’t wait to watch/hear them live in the new year.

Personally, I think twenty nineteen was a good year for music, and I can’t wait to see what tunes I’ll find in twenty twenty.
