To the Sister Turning Seventeen

To the Sister Turning Seventeen:

Thanks to the pandemic, you got out of taking the ACT on your birthday. Lucky.

Anyway, seventeen on the seventeenth. *insert nostalgic sigh* I love when that happens. I’ve wanted this day to come since I turned seventeen on the seventeenth (but in June).

Moving on…

I’ve been in your life since day one, and it’s weird to think you’ll be a legal adult next year. Of course, you can’t buy alcohol or rent a car or reserve rooms at most hotels, but that time will come too.

We’ve been through a lot together. During all my years of unhappiness, I knew you’d be on my side when things became too much and too difficult. Honestly, there were times you were my only motivation for waking up in the morning. I wanted (and still want) to be the best big sister for you.

I remember the two years we went to school together in elementary school, and everyone (especially my fifth grade teacher) called you “Little Jamilah.” If only they could see us now. We’re nothing alike, and I couldn’t be more grateful. You’re your own person, the complete opposite of me, but I know you still have a good head on your shoulders.

I’m glad we’ve got this weird agreement that you’ll be the first one to get married and have kids, especially considering our respective track records (my romantic relationship count = 0, your romantic relationship count = 3).

We’re currently going through a weird rough patch that I hope we’ll overcome. I fear I’m losing/will lose my sister — the one constant in my life — as you get older. I’m not going to force my way into your life, but if you’ll have me, I’d love to be a part of it.

Hopefully, we’ll get back to where we were — when you didn’t only contact me when you needed something or to keep our Snapchat streak. We’ll always be opposites, but I hoped it would never keep us a part.

I know we change as we get older, but I hope we don’t continue to grow a part. I’m not going to give up, but the minute you want me out, I’ll quit.

You call the shots. Happy birthday. I love you.
