The Synopsis

From self-love to romance to breaking up, Jay Shetty discusses all elements of love using gained wisdom and scientific knowledge.

The Good

There are little illustrations throughout this book that I absolutely adore.

I like the nod to COVID quarantine on page twenty-six and how everyone was making bread during that time.

He used Doctor Strange (before the Marvel movies went bad) as an example, and it made my heart happy. Furthermore, he quoted Albert Einstein and Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I also learned the brief story of the creator of Khan Academy, which gets used in schools across the nation.

I’m happy I fight with my demon of loneliness to keep me from settling and looking for another lonely soul as a cure. This book helped me realize this, especially with this line, “Loneliness makes us rush into relationships; it keeps us in the wrong relationships; and it urges us to accept less than we deserve.”

The section titled “Parental Gifts and Gaps” made me feel seen and reassured. I could’ve highlighted the entire section.

There are so many highlights in my copy of the book because he says so many good things, such as “Perhaps the most important lesson solitude offers is helping us understand our own imperfection. This prepares us to love someone else, in all their beauty and imperfection.”

I was not expecting the help on discovering my purpose, but I’m so grateful for it. This quote stays in my brain: “Your purpose is where your passions intersect with your skills.”

The Bad

It took me forever to read this book, but once you get past the difficult parts that beg you to put it down, you learn just how amazing this book is.

The Overall

“Interactive” isn’t the right word, but until I think of it, I like how this is an interactive self-help book.

Did I do any of the activities in this book? No. Will I go back and do them because this book is one I’m definitely holding onto, especially because I have highlight marks all over it? Yes.

Next book to be read and reviewed: Next to You by Hannah Bonam-Young

“Romance and attraction are indeed the initial connection points, but I define the deepest love as when you like someone’s personality, respect their values, and help them toward their goals in a long-term, committed relationship.”
