The Synopsis
After BJ Ballentine cheats on Magnolia Parks, the two do everything they can to hurt each other… and maybe even their friend group. BJ sleeps around with different women and struggles with cocaine abuse. Magnolia dates different men and rubs it in BJ’s face. However, at the end of the day, Magnolia and BJ cannot stay away from each other.
The Good
This is written as if you’re already in the world of Magnolia Parks and already supposed to know what’s going on. It’s very different from other books I’ve read, and I loved it. It gave heavy Gossip Girl vibes.
Bushka confusing Tom England being a prince with the Prince who sings “Purple Rain” was actually funny.
Gus calling everyone out in chapter 31 while ironically reading This is Going to Hurt instantly made him my favorite character.
The Bad
I need a bit more punctuation in some of the sentences. My brain processes punctuation as a moment to pause, so when it’s missing, I get confuzzled. There’s no pause, and it almost feels like someone is talking in one breath while I’m fighting for my life to understand.
There were so many errors with this book when it comes to spelling and grammar. “The frown depends” on page 202 was definitely supposed to say “The frown deepens.”
I know she was a very minor character, but I would’ve liked some translation when BJ was about to hook up with the French girl.
The Overall
Apparently I needed to know all the fashion terminology to read this and get the visual. Wish someone had warned me.
The betrayal at the end of the book would be enough for me to read the rest of the series if there were many things about it that were better.
Next book to be read and reviewed: Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
“It’s strange, don’t you think, the way we attach to people.”
