The Synopsis
After training her whole life to join the Scribe Quadrant, Violet Sorrengail is forced into the Riders Quandrant, where several of her fellow cadets and members of leadership want to kill her because of who her mother is. No one wants to kill Violet more than Xaden Riorson. Unfortunately, things get messy, and Xaden’s livelihood becomes dependent on Violet’s livelihood.
The Good
I love a good map in a book. It will get an immediate smile from me every time. Font choices also make me smile, and I love the font change for Mira and Brennan’s handwriting.
I also love the mental conversations between the dragons and their riders. Making the font—yep, more font talk—italic for that dialogue was such a genius move.
The friendship bond between Violet, Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Ridoc is so cute, especially with the banter on page 259 when Liam gets involved.
This book is inclusive without screaming it. Heaton goes by they/them pronouns. Rhiannon is bisexual. Ridoc is gay (if I remember correctly).
I’m not going to say what it was, but the comment from a super side character had me rooooolling with laughter.
Xaden has strength and stamina…
The POV change at the end?!?! STOP IT!! My heart was not ready. I was too emotionally all over the place.
The Bad
The thing that turns me off from a lot of fantasy books is not knowing how to pronounce some of the words because how in the world do you pronounce “Basgiath?”
The Overall
The critics are correct. You need to read it.
