Somehow, I had a ton of time this year to binge television shows… that came on streaming services, of course. I don’t have anyone to share my top ten shows of the year with, so here we are.
10. Buying Beverly Hills
Network/streaming service: Netflix
Thoughts: A reality show? I’m just as shocked as you are because why did I binge this? Why did I rewatch the end of season 2 in anticipation for season 3? It feeds the parts of me that love interior design, being nosey, and fashion (sort of). You couldn’t pay me to watch a season of Love is Blind post-season two or any episode of anything with Kardashians, but put on an episode of Buying Beverly Hills? I’m sat.
9. Geek Girl
Network/streaming service: Netflix
Thoughts: I’m shocked that I binged this. Keep in mind: I never read the book or books. I think this kept my attention because I empathized with homegirl’s awkwardness and not knowing what to do with your body and seeing one’s own beauty. A nice bonus is that it’s centered on modeling, and I really enjoyed seeing the different outfits curated on the show.
8. Supacell
Network/streaming service: Netflix
Thoughts: We’re getting a season twooooo. This did so many things for the Black culture, especially those from Britain. Millions upon millions of people watched this and gave it the hype it needed. This show was so complex, but the stories and people overlapped so well. I felt many things and had to sit with my discomfort during different parts of the show. The writing and acting were beautiful. I raved about this show, and though it’s number eight, I will continue to rave about this show.
7. The Perfect Couple
Network/streaming service: Netflix
Thoughts: Again, I went into this knowing nothing because I didn’t read the book. However, I enjoyed the crap out of it. It was really hard to go back to my everyday responsibilities, especially while I tried to figure out who committed the crime. Also, dare I say, Meghan Trainor did her big one with the theme song, and the cast absolutely killed the dance. It was so fun, and considering the premise of the show, it feels a little weird saying that. Speaking of “fun,” I feel like the banter between the cops did a good job of easing up some of the intensity and, low key, hatred of the family.
6. The Hair Tales
Network/streaming service: Hulu
Thoughts: I felt seen with this, even though I don’t know how to do my own hair. It was fun, and I found the conversations to be very informative. It felt like I was chillin’ at home with a bunch of beautiful Black women and discussing our hair journeys and how they have influenced our lives (and still do).
5. The Bear
Network/streaming service: Hulu
Thoughts: I started the year watching seasons one and two because of all the awards they were winning. Then I watched season three, and I was like “hmmm okay.” Also, The Bear winning all of these comedy awards has me fifty shades of confused and flabbergasted because how in the world is this show funny?? Still, I found the first two seasons and the second half of season three incredibly enjoyable. Like, I hardly moved from my couch as I binged from sun up to sun down.
4. School Spirits
Network/streaming service: Netflix (originally Paramount+)
Thoughts: I’m not sure what compelled me to watch this show, but I’m happy I did. Honestly, I was head empty watching it and sat shook until the very end. Like, I need season two right now (and I know it’s already in production). I need someone to talk to about this show, please.
3. Maxton Hall: The World Between Us
Network/streaming service: Prime Video
Thoughts: An international show is high on the list? Heck yes. The tension and chemistry between the FMC and MMC had me clutching my pearls and kicking my feet. When I was at work, this show is all I could think about. Honestly, I will probably spend my New Year’s Eve binging it again because it’s so dang good. I’m nervous and excited for future seasons. Also, side note, the author of the books the show is based on is releasing all three books in English throughout the year in 2025.
2. Superstore
Network/streaming service: Hulu (originally NBC)
Thoughts: When I finished watching the show, I was emotionally unwell for a solid twenty-four hours. Like, I was crying, and any time I stopped, I thought about not being able to watch more and started crying again. The entire cast was fantastic, and I am so grateful for all the laughs this show provided. There were moments when I thought I was going to pee myself because I was laughing so hard. I don’t know if this show won any awards, but I hope it did because it was a masterpiece.
1. Nobody Wants This
Network/streaming service: Netflix
Thoughts: As a lover of romance, of course this is number one. The chemistry between the FMC and MMC was absolutely spectacular; Adam Brody was nothing short of gorgeous in this film. There were moments when I actually laughed, and of course, I spent most of my time swooning. We went on a journey with a fantastic love story and got our happy ending. I wonder what’s going to happen in season two.
