This is a book review of Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams without spoilers.
This is a very cute, easy read. Grammatically, it is one of the better romances I’ve read, but I feel like it definitely lacks substance. The best way to summarize it is by saying to watch a spring Hallmark movie, ensuring there’s a flower shop somewhere.
What I Loved
For some reason, the one thing I fixated on was how well the grammar and sentence structure were throughout the book. In a technical sense, the book is incredibly well-written.
There were a couple of things I liked about the main characters. Even though she didn’t swear for most of the book, Annie has great wit; I low key think she would’ve been funnier if she swore. I found Will to be hilarious when he was in denial about crying, like the stereotypical man. In his perspective, he said, “And I wipe my face because apparently I’m sweating out of my eyes.”
What I... Didn't
In less than three pages, Annie tells us she’s socially anxious at least five times. It was cute comparing it to a bikini wax and day two period cramps in the first paragraph, but it stopped being cute after the third mention.
Also, the first sentence of chapter two tells us that Annie’s brother is getting married to Amelia, which Annie literally tells us two pages beforehand!! These little instances do something to me that grind my gears.
Final Thoughts
Despite the overall lack of emotion and a substantive plot, I could not put this book down. It somehow became an addicting read that I quickly flew through but will never pick up again.
"It's easier to read about relationships than to foster them. Less dangerous too."
